TOURISM PRODUCT ATTRACTION: WAU BULAN
" WAU BULAN "
Wau bulan is an intricately designed Malaysian kite that is traditionally flown in the Malaysian state of Kelantan. It is one of Malaysia's national symbols. There are many types of wau in Malaysia, each with its own specialty. Wau kucing and wau merak (peacock kite) are some of the variants. In terms of size, moon kites are made larger than other kites. A typical field is 2.5 meters long by 3.5 meters high. This is to ensure that the pattern on the kite looks clear and stands out. To highlight the attractiveness of this type of kite, the selection of bright colors and larger patterns are preferred. Wau Bulan is said to have started during the Srivijaya kingdom , which according to legend, was first used by a prince named Dewa Muda. The pattern of flowers and leaves on Dewa Muda's wau is said to be a map of the region he has mastered. The wau bulan is the subject of a popular dikir barat song, "Wau Bulan".
Wau Bulan is not only renowned as a symbol of cultural heritage but also played an important role in the daily lives of traditional communities. In the past, kites were not merely a form of entertainment but were also believed to serve as tools for scaring away birds in paddy fields. The humming sound produced by the “busur” (a bow-like device) when the kite was flown was said to deter birds from damaging the crops. This demonstrates the creativity of traditional societies in utilizing simple tools for practical purposes.
TYPES OF "WAU BULAN"
It is necessary for every Wau Bulan design to have certain essential elements that complement the Wau itself. This is crucial in preserving the original identity of the Wau. The key aspects include the main structure, size ratio, decorations, and materials used in making the kite. However, this only pertains to the basic shape design of the Wau and, does not include the Sobek (pattern) incorporated into it. The main skeleton of Wau is made of bamboo sticks and is tied up with string. The use of bamboo as the main structure is because bamboo has a high bending resistance and is easy to control. The primary structure covers the head, body/wings, waist, and tail, and each section must be linked by the 'tulang tengah' to ensure each section can connect when the flight is made.
